The Epiphany of the Lord: January 7, 2018
Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. And the Magi personify all those who believe, all those who long for God. The Magi reflect the image of all those who in their lives have not let their hearts be troubled. The Magi experienced longing; they were tired of the usual fare.
Brothers and sisters: Many people today are tired of negative news, political divisions. bad news. Many people today are so skeptical, pessimistic and Godless. Today we need a real epiphany to transform a world into good news, good energy, good life, good people. The Magi were able to worship because they had the courage to set out. And as they fell to their knees before the small, poor and vulnerable infant, the unexpected and unknown child of Bethlehem, they discovered the glory of God.
We need epiphanies. What’s an epiphany? An epiphany is an experience of sudden and striking realization. Something that inspires us right away. We need epiphanies so that there can be peace, love and courage abounding in this new year.
Many people have told me that when they come for the first time to St. Jude, they feel some sort of attraction. They feel embraced and welcomed. That’s epiphany. Epiphany is something unusual, but good. Like a smile.
