Celebrating Advent at St. Jude

Advent is the season of quiet preparation and joyful anticipation for the coming of Jesus Christ on Christmas. With the busyness and noisiness of our modern culture the idea of quiet preparation might be lost and odd for some people. But in the Liturgy we need quiet moments to listen to God. That will be our challenge to be quiet at some moments in the Liturgy during the four weeks of Advent to prepare the coming of our Lord at the end of time and to welcome Him as the infant on Christmas.

As we enter the second week of Advent, the days are short and getting colder. The nights are long and everything is quieter. As each day gets shorter and nights longer, we are reminded that we are preparing for the coming of the Light that will shine in the middle of darkness. The time is spent wrapping gifts for family and friends, decorating the home, the Christmas tree, etc. But set apart time to still your heart and your mind to make a place for the divine light in your life.

As we see the Church, many things are different: the colors, the music, the readings, and the environment. All of these changes are meant to aid us in our quest for quiet reflection as we prepare for the coming of our Lord. The four weeks of Advent have a threefold purpose: first, to prepare the birth of Jesus at Christmas; second, to focus on our reception of the Lord in Eucharist and last but not the least, to be ready to meet the Lord at the final coming.

During the season of Advent we spend more time in quiet reflection during our weekend Masses. There is a period of silence after the homily and after Communion in order to give a reflective moment and we only have instrumental music during the preparation Rite.
